Chamba in Chamba Valley of Himachal Pradesh is a charming town. It is dominated by former palaces of local Maharajas. It was founded in 920 A.D by Raja Sahil Varman. The most popularly celebrated festival of Chamba is Minjar Festival, in the month of July/August to honour Raghuvir(incarnation of Ram).
The Laxmi Narayn Temple Complex lies opposite the Akhand Chandi Palace. This is a complex of six Sikhara temples which date back from the 10th to 19th centuries. They are built in the Himachal stone hut style and are covered with carvings. There is also a small museum in the compound of this complex.
Akhand Chandi Palace is the former home of the Chamba King. It was built in the 18th century. It is today converted into a postgraduate college. Rang Mahal is yet another historical building in Chamba, it once housed the royal granary and treasury and today houses the Himachal Emporium. Here you can buy rumals embroidered with silk threads, with a perfect mirror image of the same pattern on the reverse side without an evidence of threads or knots. It is indeed worth the buy.
The Bhuri Singh Museum is another tourist attraction. It has a fabulous collection of miniature paintings from Chamba, Kangra and Basohli. There are also on display wooden carvings, weapons, rumals and relics of the then royals. In addition to this, there are many temples in Chamba which are worth visiting.
