Part 4 – Lodi Garden, Safdarjang’s Tomb and Places Around

Named after Sikandar Lodi, the Lodi Garden of Delhi is a massive garden where there are tombs of Sikandar Lodi and Mohammed Shah. Once where there used to be a village, a garden was landscaped and named Lady Willingdon Park. Named Lodi garden after independence, this today is a popular place amongst the locals. The garden is a home to several species of birds, to spot which bird-lovers are often seen roaming around with binoculars. 

 

Of the places of importance here there is the tomb of Sikandar Lodi, who died in the early 16th century. This tomb came after the tomb of Mohammed Shah here which was built in 1444. Presently under restoration process, this tomb was called Mubarak Khan ka Gumbad. Sheesh Gumbad and Bara Gumbad are the two places that distantly imitate the Qutb Minar and complex.

 

One of the historical attractions of Delhi near Lodi Garden is Safdarjang’s Tomb. It was built to commemorate Mirza Mudim Abul Mansur Khan, titled as Safdarjang, the prime minister of Emperor Mohammed Shah. The structure has a number of pavilions. An oblong water reservoir lined by palm trees adorns the front yard, whereas intricate artwork adorns several portions of this attractive structure. The tomb was built by Safdarjang’s son Shujauddaula. This tomb following the pattern of Mughal architecture is referred to as the last structure of Delhi built in this style.

 

Another fascinating attraction here is Indira Gandhi Memorial Museum, the former residence of Indira Gandhi, the late Prime Minister of India. This is the very place where she was assassinated. This lovely residence houses the personal belongings of Indira Gandhi including the clothes she was wearing when she was assassinated. A walk through this stately house surrounded by a calm and beautiful garden can give a wonderful feeling. The museum exhibits photographs of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi from happy as well as sad days, which are quite moving.
