Mahabalipuram is a town which lies in the Kancheepuram district in Tamil Nadu.
Mahabalipuram has various spectacular monuments which were built between the 7th and 9th centuries. This spectacular town has been declared a UNESCO world heritage site.
There are 5 rathas in Mahabalipuram which have been carved out of a single piece of rock. A ratha is nothing but a chariot. These are called the Panacha Rathas and they have been dedicated to the Pandavas. The carving in the rathas is so fine that it appears as if the carving has been made in wood.
Thirukadalmallai is a temple in Mahabalipuram which has been dedicated to Lord Vishnu. This temple was built buy a Pallava king and he built it so that the carvings of the temple could be saved from being corroded by the sea.
