The Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary is spread over an area of 240 square kilometres. The Sanctuary is situated in Molem, which is 57 kilometres from Panaji. It is home to a lot of mammals, birds, butterflies and reptiles, which make a visit to this sanctuary unique. This sanctuary is rich with flora and fauna and this natural wealth attracts a lot of tourists.
The Tambdi Surla Temple, Dudhgasagar Falls, the Tambdi Falls and the Devil’s Canyon make the sanctuary a popular tourist place.
The Tambdi Surla Temple is a small but beautiful 12th century temple and is located in the northern part of the sanctuary. The temple has a mandap and garbhagriha, which is made out of basalt. The Tambdi Falls is difficult to access due to the rocky and winding path that leads to it. You will need a registered guide, if you want to go there. This fall is not very high and is located near the Tambdi Surla Temple. It is located at the Karnataka border. The meaning of Dudhsagar Falls is ‘Ocean of milk’. The Dudhsagar Falls is the tallest waterfall in Goa. It is also the fifth tallest waterfall in India. The falls cannot be reached during the rainy season, which is in the months of June and July. The falls are located in the south-western part of the forest.
Apart from the above tourist attractions there is also a Sunset Point in the sanctuary. This spot provides a very spectacular view of the sanctuary. You can drive to this point by hiring vehicles at the entrance of the sanctuary.
The sanctuary has a lot of interesting and popular animals and birds and it is especially known for the sightings of the King Cobra. Animals like the Barking Deer, Leopards, Bengal Tigers, Langurs, Gaurs etc can be found here. Birds like Golden Orioles, Emerald Dove, Indian Black Woodpecker, Malabar Grey Hornbill and many other birds move freely around the sanctuary. Different species of butterflies and reptiles also inhabit this sanctuary.
In order to take a tour of this well maintained sanctuary you need to take an entry permit from the Range Forest Officer. There are also lodging facilities inside the sanctuary premises. Visiting this sanctuary can be a blissful experience as it boasts of well preserved wildlife.
